You googled “what does local SEO cost” and read the same thing everywhere: “it depends.” Then a contact form. No number. That’s not a coincidence, and it isn’t always bad intent, but it does nothing for you when all you want to know is whether we’re talking a few hundred or a few thousand.
This article names numbers. Not your number, that depends on your situation, more on that below, but the real ranges, the drivers behind them, and the warning signs that tell you whether you’re paying too much for too little. If you want a solid estimate for your own business afterwards, the end explains how. For most people the starting point is my local SEO page.
Why does almost no agency name a number?
Two reasons, and they’re worth very different amounts.
The legitimate one: local SEO isn’t an off-the-shelf product. A trades business with one location in a small town and an estate agency with five locations across greater Hamburg need completely different things. An honest number assumes someone has actually looked at your situation.
The less legitimate one: whoever doesn’t name a price can negotiate upward in the meeting, depending on how well-funded you seem. “From €2,000 a month” often means, in practice, “as much as we think you’ll pay.” A fixed price takes that game away from them, which is exactly why many agencies dislike it.
The rule of thumb: the vaguer the price, the more closely you should look at what you actually get for it.
What actually drives the cost?
Four things decide where you land in the range, none of them is “how good the agency’s sales pitch is.”
Scope. Setting up your Google Business Profile cleanly is a one-off project. Building visibility over time, content, reviews, citations, monitoring, is ongoing work. Those are two different price classes, and most providers deliberately blur them.
Competition. In a crowded market (estate agents in Hamburg) it takes more work to land in the 3-Pack than in a niche with three providers. More work, higher price, that’s honestly how it is.
Number of locations. Each extra location is its own profile, its own service areas, its own consistency upkeep. The effort doesn’t scale linearly, but it does scale.
Whether paid ads are involved. Local Service Ads aren’t SEO, they’re a separate budget, typically €30 to €100 a day here, charged per qualified lead, not per click. That’s media spend on top, not a service fee.
The honest ranges
No games, with real orders of magnitude:
- One-time GBP optimisation (fixed price). Setting up one profile completely and correctly once, categories, services, photos, first posts, review strategy. With me at a fixed price around €499. It’s the cheapest honest entry point, and for many small businesses it’s enough to start.
- Ongoing local SEO (retainer). When visibility is to be built and held over months, this runs, depending on scope, from a few hundred to over a thousand euros a month. More for competitive markets and multiple locations. Serious providers don’t lock you into 24-month contracts for it.
- Local Service Ads. Pure media budget, €30 to €100 a day as a starting range, plus the management if you don’t run it yourself.
What you should not pay: €500 a month to an agency that enters your name into 200 cheap directories and calls it “backlink building.” That’s the most common way small businesses burn money on local SEO.
How to spot worthless SEO
The most expensive mistake isn’t overpaying. It’s paying for months for something that moves nothing, and only noticing once a year is gone. The warning signs:
- No reporting you understand. If after three months you can’t say whether more people are calling, the money isn’t working for you.
- Guarantees of “page 1.” Nobody can guarantee Google rankings. Anyone who does is selling you a story.
- Long lock-in with no exit. Good work doesn’t need a 24-month contract to hold you.
- Directory spam instead of real local signals. A mass of cheap listings is the opposite of clean NAP consistency.
Why a fixed price is often more honest
A fixed price forces the provider to define the scope up front, you know what you get, and I know what I deliver. No “from €X,” no renegotiating, no surprise on the invoice. For a self-contained piece of work like a GBP optimisation, that’s the fairest form. For ongoing work, a transparent monthly price with a clear scope is the equivalent.
It doesn’t mean fixed price is always cheaper. It means you know where you stand before you start.
What it costs for your business
The honest answer stays: it depends on your situation, scope, competition, locations. But “it depends” doesn’t have to be the end of the conversation; it can be the start.
I’ll look at your profile and your situation and tell you concretely what makes sense in your case and what it costs, before you commit to anything. A diagnosis, not a sales pitch. Start on my local SEO page.
